Combined study/training program at the ALBA Group


When is the application deadline for the combined program?
We recommend that you send in your application as early as possible. We are happy to accept your applications up to a year in advance of the program starting date (e.g., after October/November 2010 for a program beginning in October 2011).

What are the required educational qualifications?
The educational pre-requisites vary depending on the direction of study: for all of our courses of study, you will need a general qualification for university entrance (A-levels or high school diploma).

When does the program of study begin, and how long will it last?
The study program begins every October 1, and lasts for three years.  

How are the practical segments organised?
In the practical segments, you will directly implement what you have learned in the co-op program in collaborative projects and independent research. Early on, you will have a chance to get to know the corporate culture, business operations, and corporate objectives of the ALBA Group.


Vocational Training at the ALBA Group

How long is the vocational training program?
There is no fixed, uniform period of time set for vocational training programs. They vary according to vocational trade, prior knowledge, schooling, and level of performance during training. In general, however, combined vocational programs in Germany are between two and three and a half years long. 

Can my training period be shortened? In principle, an abbreviated training period is possible, if you possess a level of education that is higher than required. High school graduates, independent of type of training program, may shorten it by half a year as appropriate, and up to a whole year is possible for those qualified for university study. Above-average grades earned during the vocational training program can also be used to cut down on the length of time required. Similarly, extensions may be granted in the event of illness.

How much will I be paid during the training?
The level of pay is based on recommendations from the chamber of commerce. The exact amount is also dependent up on which company you are employed by within the ALBA Group.

What are the chances of permanent employment?
The changes of employment following your training are very good. Typically, more than 70% of trainees are hired every year. 

Can one also do a student internship in your company?
Student internships are always welcome within the ALBA Group. Every year, we offer a number of students the chance to complete an internship.

What kind of selection process does ALBA Group utilise?

After your application is submitted via our online job portal, we will send you confirmation that we received it. After a thorough evaluation of all application documents, we will select a small number of applicants who will be asked to take the online test. The online test allows us to gain a first impression of the student. Those candidates who do well on the test will be invited to a personal interview at the training division.

The most interesting candidates stand out for their personal initiative, assertiveness, and strong motivation to get things done. The most important requirement for your success is that you yourself become active.

How important is it to have previous work experience in the industry?  
For an internship at the ALBA Group, previous experience in the industry is not a necessity. We are certain that within a short amount of time, you will have become familiar with our business, and will be enthusiastically helping to shape the dynamic growth of the company.

Is it possible for me to write my final thesis during my internship at the ALBA Group? 
 
Thesis projects are very welcome at the ALBA Group, within a three-month long internship in the consortium. This provides you with the opportunity to define and develop your thesis with input from the department.

May I join the ALBA Group as a working student?

It is possible to be a working student at the ALBA Group, although this is primarily reserved for students who have already completed an internship in our company.

Grooming future talent at the ALBA Group


Do you offer a trainee program?

The trainee program of the ALBA Group is set up for university and college graduates, as well as professionals. It forms a foundation for the development of new professional talent within the ALBA Group. As a trainee, over the course of 12 months you will cycle through various departments, where you will be given a good deal of responsibility for day-to-day business operations and assigned project-related tasks. At present, there are 16 trainees in the program, working either as corporate trainees or specialised trainees (in such areas as marketing, controlling, trading, etc.). How does the ALBA Group’s corporate trainee program differ from an entry-level position?
The difference between accepting a job as a trainee and accepting an entry-level position has to do with the level of professional expertise. For this reason, all positions requiring a good deal of specialised knowledge are filled with an entry-level applicant. By contrast, trainees have a more generalised educational background.

Which disciplines are sought by the ALBA Group Trainee Program?
We seek applicants who hold degrees in business economics and engineering. However, applications from other disciplines are also welcome, since at the end of the day, it’s up to you to persuade us with your own individual attributes.

After a thorough evaluation of all documents submitted, we will select a small number of applicants, with whom telephone interviews will be conducted. By means of this telephone interview, we are able to gain an initial impression of the individual applicant. Beyond this, the telephone conversation enables us to match the position to the qualifications, motivation, and aspirations of the applicant. Those candidates who are most convincing in the telephone interview will be invited to a day-long assessment at our centre. In addition to appearing at a personal interview, the candidate will prepare a case study, and take part in a group discussion on a current business topic.

How and when is the plan outlining the various stations of the trainee program set up? 
Your supervisor will plan the stations at the start of the trainee program, in cooperation with the Human Resources department. This process takes into account your individual requirements and requests, incorporating as well the current trends in the market. 

Who will be my contact partner within the trainee program?
During the training period, your direct supervisor is your contact partner. In addition, so-called coaching sessions will take place parallel to each station, providing you with feedback on your personal development and targeted goals. At each operational division, you will find a contact partner on site within the management of each business area and company.
